About Google Cloud Run

Google Cloud Run is one of the ways Google documents for hosting a server-side Google Tag Manager (sGTM) container. You run the tagging server in your own Google Cloud project. Google LLC makes the software and the cloud; there is no separate vendor between you and the servers.

Google recommends at least 2 instances with 1 vCPU and 0.5 GB memory each, autoscaling up to 10, and estimates about $45 per month per server. You pay Google Cloud usage, plus logging and load balancer charges if you use them. A custom domain, a path on your own site, and multiple regions are supported.

Features such as a custom script loader, longer cookie lifetime and bot detection are not part of the setup. They need third-party templates or your own work. Data stays in the Google Cloud region you choose, which can be in the EU, UK or US.

Pros
  • You own the Google Cloud project and the data in it
  • Official Google setup guide, with automatic provisioning from Tag Manager
  • Custom domain on a subdomain or on a path of your own site
  • Runs in EU, UK and US regions, with multi-region setups possible
  • Works with any sGTM tag template
Cons
  • Google estimates about $45 per month per server, at least 2 servers recommended
  • Custom loader, cookie lifetime control and bot detection are not built in
  • Geo headers need load balancer configuration, which adds a per-request fee
  • Request logging can add charges above about 1 million requests per month
  • You set up, monitor and maintain the servers yourself

Software type
